Since we're reminiscing, it's interesting that just the other day I ran across a WSJ that I kept dated December 1995, and in it Walt Mossberg in his popular Personal Technology column in section B1 throws dozens of design compliments Jan's way. Here are a few highlights from the article that illustrates how design-centered thinking can be a life-long gift, and how Jan's design methodologies were put into practice to turn around Microsoft's Money product — Money95:
- "But the surprise is that Microsoft has finally turned Money into a very respectable competitor mostly by adopting a new, clean look and feel for the latest version"
- "...it's a handsome and smart product that's aimed at novice users of financial software."
- "Everything in Money is accessed from a single, simple contents screen trimmed in virtual wood paneling to give it that banker's look. Money automatically displays relevant charts for many situations."
- "Money is finally a worthy competitor to Quicken."
Cool stuff, and no - the product's wood paneling didn't look like a station wagon, ha. That would have been 1975 (not 1995).
