I think abrupt and negative text is actually a good idea. It has been proven that the less text is displayed the more likely the user is to read it. Did anyone have problems with "bad command or file name" in the DOS days? The current equivalent in Windows 7, "Windows cannot find 'blorgh'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." Imagine if this were even "nicer" with things like "we're sorry", "unfortunately", "please", and "thank you". How many people will look at it enough to figure out what it's telling us? Further, how many will notice the difference if the core message is "out of memory", say, if it's formatted with the same way and contains the same beginning "Unfortunately" and ends with "we're sorry"?
