Um, what about the obvious - changing the hint text to: "Type appointment here and press Enter"? We've found that works great for our search box.

I agree with Dan. If you want to avoid having the button on the screen all the time then you just need to make the instructions clearer.

Even the hover state of the button is so muted that it will hardly be noticed. It isn't distracting at all. I would guess that you could leave the button visible all the time and no users would be bothered. Did you test that out in your usability lab?

I did not use your calendar, but my first reaction to "Type appointment here" was that it is going to do a search in the existing appointments (again, maybe conditioned by browsers).
I had to read the blog to figure out that type + Enter = add new appointment. And it still does not feel right.

Maybe changing the hint to something like "Type here to add appointment" or something along these lines might help?
